Ask anyone behind a counter and they'll tell you: flashlights are one of the most-asked-about items in any store. Here are the answers to the questions we hear most.
"How bright does it need to be?"
Brightness is measured in lumens. A few hundred lumens covers most jobs around the house; outdoor use benefits from more. What really matters is having several modes, so you can save battery when full power isn't needed.
"How long will the battery last?"
Look for runtime figures for each mode, not just the brightest one. A light that runs for hours on medium is far more useful in an outage than one that's dazzling for twenty minutes.
"How do I charge it?"
"Will it survive the car or the campsite?"
An aluminum body handles knocks and drops. Look for IPX4 or better if it'll be used in the rain.
"Which extras are worth it?"
- Zoom: switches between a wide beam and a focused spot.
- SOS or strobe: useful in emergencies.
- Pocket clip: handy for walks and work.
From the counter: keep one light in the kitchen drawer and one in the car — that covers most surprises.
Follow the manufacturer's charging instructions and never shine a bright beam into anyone's eyes.
